A Downtown Las Vegas homeowner came to us wanting something that would stand out — not a box with a grill in it, but a real backyard centerpiece. What we built is a T-shaped custom BBQ island topped in quartzite, wrapped in aluminum wood siding, and built around a Lion 32-inch grill. Here’s the story of the design.
The brief was simple to say and harder to deliver: build something unique. This homeowner didn’t want the standard straight island every patio store sells — they wanted a piece with presence, a clean modern look, and materials that would still turn heads years down the road under Southern Nevada sun. That pushed the design toward a distinctive shape, a premium countertop, and a finish most valley backyards don’t have.
We chose a T-shaped layout — a main cooking run with a wing extending off it for dining and gathering. The shape does real work: it separates the cook’s space from where guests sit, gives the island a sculptural footprint instead of a flat wall, and makes the whole structure feel intentional. It’s the kind of layout planning that turns a grill station into the backyard’s focal point.
The top is quartzite — one of the best outdoor countertop materials for the desert. It’s harder than granite, holds its color under relentless UV, and handles heat beautifully when properly selected and sealed. Its natural, flowing movement gives the island a luxury, marble-like look without the fragility real marble would have outdoors here. On a piece meant to stand out, the countertop had to carry the drama, and quartzite delivers it.
For the body, we used aluminum wood siding — the warmth of wood grain with none of the way real lumber chalks, warps, and fails in the Las Vegas climate. It resists UV and heat, keeps its finish, and reads as modern and warm at the same time. Against the quartzite top, it’s the combination that made this island feel custom instead of catalog.
At the heart of the island sits a Lion 32-inch built-in grill. As an authorized Lion Premium Grills dealer, we build the cutout, clearances, and surrounding stonework to the exact unit, so the grill sits flush and looks like it was made for the stone — because it was. Lion delivers the best build quality per dollar in the category, which is why it’s the grill we install most.
Three choices did it: the T-shaped footprint, the quartzite top, and the aluminum wood siding. Individually, each is an upgrade. Together, they make an island that doesn’t look like anyone else’s on the block — exactly what the homeowner asked for. It’s proof that a BBQ island can be as much a design statement as a cooking station.
Every material on this build was chosen for the desert first and looks second — which is how it earns both. It’s the same approach we bring to every outdoor kitchen in Las Vegas and every island we set across the valley. If you want a backyard piece that stands out and lasts, this is the standard we build to.
