Not long ago, our founder Chad was working on a project in a Las Vegas neighborhood when he looked into the backyard next door and recognized his own work — a BBQ island he had built about 25 years earlier, still standing and still in use. The new owners were kind enough to let him step back there and take a photo. This is that island.
Most things in a backyard don’t last 25 years. Cart grills rust out and hit the curb. Patio furniture fades. Trends come and go. But a BBQ island built as real masonry doesn’t follow that timeline — it stays put, keeps working, and quietly outlasts nearly everything around it. This one has served two sets of owners in the same Las Vegas backyard, and it’s still going.
The white refrigerator gives its age away — that, and the styling of its era. Design tastes have moved on in a quarter-century, and if we built this island today the finishes and appliances would look different. But look past the fridge and the bones are exactly what they were on day one: solid structure, a grill set into stone, counter space that still works for a weekend cookout. The look dates it; the build doesn’t.

The 25-year island isn’t a one-off. We were recently back in another Las Vegas backyard — this one home to an outdoor kitchen we built about 12 years ago — and found the same thing: still standing, still cooking, still holding up to the desert. When we say we build for the long haul, this is what we mean. It’s a track record you can actually go look at.

There’s no secret to it — just no shortcuts. We built it the same way we build every custom BBQ island today: real masonry instead of a bolt-together kit, outdoor-rated finishes, and stainless components chosen for the desert. Full Las Vegas sun and 115° summers destroy anything built to a price. Build it right the first time, and 25 years later it’s a photo op instead of a memory.
The appliances and finishes have come a long way — quartzite and porcelain counters, aluminum wood siding, LED-lit showpiece islands. What hasn’t changed is the construction underneath. Whether it’s a straight island or a full outdoor kitchen, we build for the long haul, because that’s the only way we know how. We’ve been doing it across the valley since 1998.
Any contractor can promise their work will last. Not many can walk you into a backyard and show you a build that’s still standing decades later. When you hire Sun West, you’re not buying a project that has to look good on install day — you’re buying one built to still be there when the next owners move in. That’s the difference real construction makes.
Sun West Outdoor Kitchens designs and builds custom outdoor kitchens, BBQ islands, fire features, and backyard living spaces for Southern Nevada homeowners who want a project that looks great and holds up in Las Vegas heat.
A well-built custom BBQ island is permanent masonry, not furniture — it is meant to last decades. We recently revisited one we built about 25 years ago that is still standing and still in use. Longevity comes down to real construction and materials chosen for the desert.
Real masonry construction, outdoor-rated finishes, and countertop materials that handle heat and UV — plus 304 stainless components that resist the sun. Built-to-a-price kits with thin frames and lower-grade stainless do not hold up the same way in the Mojave.
Often, yes. A structurally sound island can frequently be refreshed with a new countertop, finish, grill, or storage rather than torn out. If the bones are good, there is a lot we can do to modernize it.
Yes. Sun West Outdoor Kitchens has been building custom outdoor kitchens and BBQ islands across Southern Nevada since 1998. Finding our own decades-old work still standing is one of the benefits of building in the same valley for that long.
That is the standard we build to on every project — real masonry, desert-rated materials, and honest construction. See our custom BBQ islands and request a free consultation to start yours.
