The new owners were kind enough to let him step back there and take a photo. This is that island.
Most things in a backyard don’t last 25 years. Cart grills rust out and hit the curb. Patio furniture fades. Trends come and go. This one has served two sets of owners in the same Las Vegas backyard, and it’s still going.
The white refrigerator gives its age away — that, and the styling of its era. Design tastes have moved on in a quarter-century, and if we built this island today the finishes and appliances would look different. But look past the fridge and the bones are exactly what they were on day one: solid structure, a grill set into stone, counter space that still works for a weekend cookout. The look dates it; the build doesn’t.
The 25-year island isn’t a one-off. We were recently back in another Las Vegas backyard — this one home to an outdoor kitchen we built about 12 years ago — and found the same thing: still standing, still cooking, still holding up to the desert.
