If we could only use one countertop material for Las Vegas outdoor kitchens, it would be quartzite. Here’s why it earns a spot on so many of our builds.
Built for the desert. Quartzite is a natural stone formed under intense heat and pressure — which makes it one of the few counter materials genuinely comfortable in a Vegas summer. It shrugs off triple-digit heat, resists UV fading that yellows many engineered surfaces, and handles the day-night temperature swings of the desert without cracking or degrading.
Tougher than granite. Quartzite is harder than granite on the Mohs scale, which means better scratch resistance from grill tools, cast iron, and everyday outdoor use. Sealed properly, it also resists staining from BBQ sauce, citrus, and wine — all the things that actually happen around a grill.
Every slab is one of a kind. Because it’s natural stone, quartzite carries dramatic veining and movement that engineered quartz can’t replicate. On our Mesa Park build in Summerlin South, we ran full-slab quartzite with waterfall edges down both sides of a 10-foot island — the stone is the first thing everyone comments on. One important note: quartzite is often confused with quartz (an engineered product with resin binders). For outdoor use, that distinction matters — the resins in quartz can yellow and degrade in direct sun, which is why we steer Vegas clients toward true quartzite for uncovered installations.
Care is simple: periodic sealing, mild soap and water, and it’ll outlast the grill.
