The Missing Room

Las Vegas Was Built for Outdoor Living — Most Backyards Weren't

Southern Nevada gives you something almost no other city in America can: eleven months of weather worth being outside for. Yet most valley homes come with a concrete pad, a block wall, and nothing in between — from brand-new builds in Inspirada and Skye Canyon to established backyards in Green Valley and Anthem. That unused square footage is the most valuable unfinished room in your house.

A custom outdoor kitchen changes how your home works. Dinner moves outside from September through June. Game days, birthdays, and holidays stop crowding your indoor kitchen and start spreading out under the sky. And because a well-built outdoor kitchen is permanent construction — stone, steel, and craftsmanship, not patio furniture — it adds real, appraisable value to your home while you use it.

The catch is the desert itself. At 115° in July, with UV that fades paint and monsoon dust that finds every gap, ordinary materials and indoor-grade appliances fail fast. Building an outdoor kitchen that lasts in Las Vegas is a specialist's job. It's the only job we do.

Why Homeowners Choose Sun West

You're not hiring a page on the internet — you're letting a builder into your backyard for a month. Here's what you can verify about ours.

Since 1998 · 1,000+ Projects

Nearly three decades of construction in the Las Vegas valley — from Summerlin estates to North Las Vegas family backyards — through every soil type, HOA, and summer this desert can produce. Experience is why our quotes are accurate and our timelines hold.

Licensed, Bonded & Insured

Nevada Contractor License #0095511 — look it up before you call us; we encourage it. Every structure we build is held to the standard we'd want in our own backyard. No handshake construction.

Custom Design, Not Catalogs

We design around how your family actually cooks and entertains — seat counts, traffic flow, shade angles, smoke direction. No prefab islands dropped on a pad. Every project starts from your yard, not our inventory.

Desert-Rated Materials

Quartzite, porcelain, 304 stainless, and stone selected specifically for 115° summers and relentless UV — so your kitchen still photographs like new when your kids are in college.

Premium Craftsmanship

Mitered stone corners, level counter runs, concealed hardware, clean caulk lines. The parts you'll never see — footings, waterproofing, structural prep — get the same standard as the counter you'll touch every day.

See It Before We Build It

From Sketch to Finished Kitchen

The most expensive mistakes in outdoor construction happen on paper that was never drawn. Our design process makes sure the kitchen you imagine, the kitchen you approve, and the kitchen you cook in are the same kitchen.

Sketch

We walk your yard and rough the layout on-site — seat counts, traffic flow, sun and smoke direction.

3D

3D Rendering

Your kitchen modeled in three dimensions with real materials — walk around it before a block is set.

Construction

The approved design is exactly what gets built — matched detail-for-detail to the rendering.

Finished Project

The reveal: the space you approved in pixels, standing in stone and stainless in your backyard.

Changing a wall on a screen costs nothing. Changing it after the stone is set costs weeks. That's why every Sun West project is approved visually before construction begins.

Island Configurations

Choose Your Layout

Every yard and every family cooks differently. These are the five configurations we design around — and during your consultation we'll tell you honestly which one your space wants.

Design Advice

Pick the layout for how you host, not for how it photographs. If your gatherings are six people, an L-Shape with generous seating beats a U-Shape you'll walk around — the best layout is the one that disappears into how you already live.

BBQ Island

A clean single run with grill, storage, and counter space. The efficient choice for patios and side yards.

L-Shape

Wraps the corner to separate cooking from serving. Our most-built layout — big counters without closing off the space.

U-Shape

Maximum counter, storage, and appliance capacity — the chef stays inside the kitchen and inside the conversation.

Galley Style

Two parallel runs — a hot side for cooking and a cool side for prep, serving, and bar space between them.

Island Seating

Bar-height seating built into the island itself, so guests sit at the action — the layout that turns dinner into a hangout.

Materials That Survive the Mojave

Every material below is one we install and stand behind. Each has honest trade-offs — here's the same guidance we give at consultations.

Quartzite Countertops

Best for: homeowners who want natural stone beauty with maximum durability. Quartzite is harder than granite, shrugs off UV without fading, and handles hot cookware straight off the grill. Trade-off: it's a premium-priced material, and the most dramatic slabs cost more still. Worth it on the counters you'll see and touch every day.

Granite Countertops

Best for: proven performance at a friendlier price than quartzite. Granite has decades of outdoor track record in the valley, resists heat well, and offers huge color variety. Trade-off: needs periodic resealing outdoors, and some darker slabs get noticeably hot in full summer sun — placement matters, and we design for it.

Porcelain Slabs

Best for: modern, crisp aesthetics and near-zero maintenance. Porcelain is non-porous (no sealing, no staining), colorfast under UV, and stays cooler than dark stone. Trade-off: edges are less forgiving of hard impact than stone, and fabrication demands real skill — one reason to hire a specialist rather than a generalist.

Concrete

Best for: contemporary designs and custom shapes stone can't easily match. Trade-off: in our climate concrete demands proper reinforcement, expansion control, and sealing to prevent hairline cracking through 60° day-night temperature swings. Done right it's stunning; done cheap it's a callback machine. We do it right or recommend against it.

Stone Veneers

Best for: island and wall facing — from stacked stone to ledger panels to full natural stone. Veneer delivers the luxury look while keeping structure and cost sensible. Trade-off: quality varies enormously between manufactured products; we install lines we've watched survive ten Las Vegas summers, not whatever's on sale.

Builder Tip

Deciding between porcelain and granite? It's our most-asked countertop question — we wrote an honest side-by-side: Porcelain vs. Granite for Las Vegas outdoor kitchens.

Cabinets & Storage

Best for: the working guts of the kitchen. We install 304-grade stainless doors and drawers (the outdoor standard), and for enclosed cabinetry, marine-grade polymer or powder-coated aluminum systems that laugh at sprinklers and dust. Trade-off: budget stainless (430-grade) rusts here — one of the corners we never cut.

An Honest Word

Why We Don't Build Cheap Outdoor Kitchens

You can build an outdoor kitchen in Las Vegas for a lot less than we charge. We think you deserve to understand exactly what that lower number buys — not as a scare tactic, but because an educated homeowner makes a better decision, whoever they hire.

Materials are engineered for the desert, or they fail in it. Indoor-grade cabinets swell, 430-grade stainless rusts, unsealed stone stains, and dark laminates warp — not in decades, but in a few Mojave summers. The cost difference between the right material and the almost-right one is small on the invoice and enormous three years later.

Outdoor-rated appliances exist for a reason. A refrigerator built for a climate-controlled kitchen will die its first July outdoors — and can become a genuine safety hazard in monsoon season. Every appliance we install carries a true outdoor rating, which is also what keeps its manufacturer warranty valid.

Cabinetry is the working skeleton of the kitchen. Doors and drawers get opened thousands of times a year, inches from heat, water, and dust. 304-grade stainless and marine-grade polymer keep working; budget hardware sticks, sags, and streaks the stone around it.

The groundwork is invisible — until it isn't. Footings, drainage, and structural reinforcement never show up in a photo, but they decide whether an island stays level and crack-free through decades of desert temperature swings. Cutting the prep is the cheapest place to save money and the most expensive place to have saved it.

Craftsmanship is what longevity looks like up close. Proper footings, expansion control, waterproofing behind the veneer, mitered corners that stay tight through 60-degree temperature swings — none of it shows in a first-week photo, and all of it decides whether the kitchen still looks built-yesterday in year ten. That's the standard we'd want in our own backyard, so it's the only one we build to.

7 Mistakes Homeowners Make When Planning an Outdoor Kitchen

After nearly three decades of builds — and plenty of calls to fix kitchens built without a plan — these are the mistakes we see most. Every one of them is avoidable at the design stage, and avoiding them is free.

  1. Choosing indoor materials for an outdoor room. Interior cabinets, indoor-grade stainless, and unsealed surfaces are designed for a climate-controlled house. In a Mojave backyard they swell, rust, and fade — usually within two or three summers. Rule of thumb: if the label doesn't say outdoor-rated, the desert will read it for you.
  2. Buying the grill before designing the kitchen. A grill bought on sale often doesn't fit the island that has to be built around it — wrong cutout, wrong clearances, wrong ventilation. Design the kitchen first; the grill is a component, not the starting point.
  3. Ignoring traffic flow. The cook shouldn't have their back to every guest, and guests shouldn't cross the hot zone to reach a drink. We map how people will actually move through the space — it's the least glamorous part of design and the one you'll appreciate every single weekend.
  4. Skimping on prep space. The most common regret we hear about other builds: plenty of grill, nowhere to set a tray. Plan at least as much open counter as cooking surface — more if you host.
  5. Ignoring the sun. A west-facing grill puts the cook staring into the sunset every summer evening, and some dark counters get too hot to touch in full afternoon exposure. Orientation and shade are design decisions, not afterthoughts — we study both on every site visit.
  6. Treating lighting as an afterthought. Las Vegas outdoor kitchens get used most after sunset, ten months a year. Task lighting over the grill and prep zones, ambient light for the seating — designed in from the start, not strung up later.
  7. Building for today's parties only. Families grow, gatherings grow. The island that fits four today should have the counter, seating, and prep capacity for the holidays you'll host in five years. Adding capacity on paper is cheap; adding it to finished stone is not.

What Does an Outdoor Kitchen Cost in Las Vegas?

Straight answer: most Sun West outdoor kitchens land between $15,000 and $80,000+. A well-equipped built-in BBQ island typically starts in the mid-teens; a full kitchen with premium appliances, stone or porcelain counters, refrigeration, and a media wall runs $40,000–$80,000; estate-level projects with pavilions, bars, and multiple cooking stations go beyond that.

What moves the number: size and layout (linear feet of island is the biggest driver), appliance tier (a Lion package and a Fire Magic package can differ by five figures), countertop material, project scope, and site conditions (access, existing hardscape, drainage) — a new Southern Highlands build and an established Mountains Edge backyard present very different starting points, and we quote each honestly.

Every Sun West proposal is itemized in plain English — materials named, line by line — and the quoted price changes only if you change the scope. For real 2026 numbers by project type, read our Las Vegas outdoor kitchen cost guide.

Plan Your Budget

Estimate Your Outdoor Kitchen Investment

No two outdoor kitchens cost the same — because no two families cook, host, or use their backyard the same way. Your investment is shaped by the size of the island, the grill and appliance package, your countertop material, your site conditions and backyard layout, and whether shade, lighting, and seating are part of the picture.

The honest way to budget is a range built from your real choices — not a teaser number that doubles later. Tell us what you're imagining and we'll give you a realistic investment range in one conversation, backed by nearly three decades of actual Las Vegas project costs.

What Homeowners Say

"It's always a pleasure to write a review when you only have positive things to say. Chad was referred to me by Mike (owner) of New View Landscape. I wanted a very custom outdoor kitchen area that included a BBQ, a Green egg smoker, and an EVO skillet all with a modern but timeless style. Simply put, Chad delivered. He communicated clearly on timelines, and scheduling. I felt bad as on a couple of evenings he worked even as the sun faded..he takes his timelines very seriously and is appreciated. He provided many options for stucco colors, and drawers/hardware with an option to get drawers myself or he could source them. The job was almost finished when we both noticed that the counter was not cut correctly around the EVO skillet. He immediately took care of it without question and with little delay. All of our friends and family love the outdoor kitchen and more importantly we do. I would highly recommend Chad!"

Imagine the First Evening

This Is What You're Really Building

Nobody dreams about quartzite. They dream about the Friday night when dinner moves outside and stays there until the string lights are the only light left. About game days where the cook never misses a play, because the TV wall faces the grill. About Thanksgiving with the turkey on the smoker and twenty people who somehow all found a seat.

That's the actual product. We've built it behind estate homes in The Ridges and Red Rock Country Club, and behind family homes in Green Valley and Mountains Edge — and the finished projects get used exactly the same way: constantly. The kitchen becomes where homework happens on warm evenings, where neighbors linger, where the holidays default to your house now.

Luxury, the way we build it, isn't excess — it's a space so right for how your family lives that you stop noticing it and start living in it. Eleven months a year, in the best outdoor-living climate in America.
